New television platform improves patient experience at St. Antonius Hospital

A hospital should be a place where patients feel as comfortable as possible. A hospital stay is often stressful, so it helps when the technology around patients works seamlessly. As a result, they can focus on their recovery instead of dealing with unnecessary frustrations. St. Antonius Hospital in Utrecht was looking for a solution that would make this possible: one platform that allows patients to easily arrange everything without any hassle.

The challenge

St. Antonius Hospital in Utrecht is a top clinical hospital with more than five hundred beds. The hospital wanted to improve the patient experience with a smart, integrated TV system.

The hospital set a clear goal: patients and visitors of all ages should be able to arrange everything at the touch of a button. For example, they should be able to watch television, check visiting hours, view medication schedules and book appointments with doctors through a single platform. In addition, the system needed to operate reliably 24/7 and support future applications as the hospital’s needs evolve.

The solution

AVEX brought together the right partners and worked closely with CareScreen – a software developer focused on supporting healthcare processes and patient experience – and LG, as the manufacturer of Smart TVs, to develop an integrated solution.

The team chose LG Smart TVs that are suitable for 24/7 use. CareScreen expanded the platform with specific hospital applications. As a result, the hardware and software work seamlessly together.

First, the project team conducted a pilot and extensively tested the solution for usability, navigation and alignment with hospital workflows. This approach allowed the team to identify and address any issues before moving forward. After the pilot delivered positive results, the team rolled out the solution across the hospital.

The result

Hundreds of LG Smart TVs are now installed in the hospital in Utrecht. Patients control both the platform and the television with a single remote control.

“The advantage of this LG solution is that it is a Smart TV that combines various functionalities and makes them quickly and easily accessible to our patients,” says Wenny Braam.

AVEX’s role

AVEX was responsible for the 3D design, programming and implementation of the audiovisual system for the council chambers and meeting rooms. The integration with the existing RIS and webcast environment was also realised. In addition, AVEX provided the training.

The AVEX project manager handled the full project management, including coordination with third parties to integrate the audiovisual equipment with building-related installations, furniture or fixed fittings.
